Russ Martin Show: how it’s more than what it is.
There are a few things in life
that change your life without you knowing it, or stopped your life from
changing. Change can be a good thing or
a bad thing, getting a promotion or a new job is a good thing, getting in a car
accident and lying in a hospital bed is an undoubtedly a bad one.
Russ Martin Show is talk show
featured in the Dallas radio station 97.1 The Eagle Rocks. A four hour long
program, where on normal days four guys (Russ, Dan, Alfie and Clo) discuss
about the news, points and views. Recently there was a girl intern for a short
period of time, Kinsey.
The show itself is highly controversial,
with raunchy topics, crude language, and rude behavior. They provide their atheistic views, and to the
point blunt statements. With a huge fan
base following and equal following of people who are against their point of
view.
Today I am not going to discuss
about their show, but how this affects my daily life.
Shocking as it might sound to the
readers right now, I must say that driving in the busy roads of Dallas, I would
probably be involved in an accident a long time back if it was not for this
particular show. I started my current job about a year back. I work in the construction,
so I need to travel a lot. When I started the job I had just returned to the
States from my visit back home. Recently applied and got my American drivers
license.
A new truck came with the job.
Driving around town with a vehicle with automatic transmission was fun. But combining
that with traffic was, boring!!! And with boredom comes the inability to stay
awake. With short hours of sleep at
night, I used to feel sleepy when I drive. To counteract the effect, I used to
listen to the radio, listen to music. The only problem, I listen to music when I
go to sleep. So what do I start? I start singing with the songs, with no avail.
I used to still feel sleepy.
There used to be days of driving
where I just had to scream with the songs just to stay awake. One day I got a
can of coke from a jobsite. And I was drinking that right before I headed back
home. The sugar laced with caffeine did the trick that day. Amazingly this
drink which was created in the earlier part of the 20th century as a
medication could also counteract the effect of my drowsiness while driving. But
I regretted that, because a few years back when I used to work at McDonalds, I’m
pretty sure the 30 pounds I gained was because of the two huge glasses of coke I
was drinking a day, when I worked there. I didn’t want to gain the weight that I
had struggled to lose the past year.
But I had to drink the coke, because
I didn’t want to start drink energy drinks and go from bad to worse. After a
few weeks my body acclimatized to the magical drink, I was again starting to
feel droopy even with the elixir of wakefulness. I started to sing while
driving with a coke in my hand.
On one of these days while
driving, being stuck in traffic, I was bored out of my mind. I started to switch the stations on the
radio. Suddenly, from the barrage of different station with music playing, one
came up which had some guys talking. One of the first words I heard was the
B**** word. That instantly grabbed my attention out of lethargy and snapped me
back to reality. The guys were talking fast, talking what they like, and didn’t
give a damn about what anyone else thought about them. The show was controversial,
but it was very interesting.
Being out of stupor, I realized
that the quick witted show had brought me out of my sleepiness.
From that day onwards I listen to
the show religiously, that’s funny because
the show basically has four atheistic guys who trash religion so devotedly.
Now, why is the show more than
what it was intended to be for me?
If it was not for the show, my
unusual sleeping pattern would have taken its toll. Some of the following
things would have happened to me:
·
The scariest: I would be involved in a traffic
accident.
·
The guiltiest: I would be hooked on Coke or
other energy drink to stay awake, and gained the 30 pounds and some more which I
had worked hard to lose.
·
The most expensive: I never used to have dental
problem, but after working in McDonalds I had six of my teeth to be worked on, I’m
pretty sure it’s because of the sugar in the drink. Getting back on the drink,
I’m pretty sure that would be a recurring thing, and dental visits isn’t cheap
in the states, neither is it pain free.
Because of the show I believe that
I am more alert now while I’m driving. I haven’t been in an accident, and I haven’t
had any health problems. This means the
show has unknowingly reduced my expenses, and stopped my health from
deteriorating.
There are a few things in life
that change your life without you knowing it, or stopped your life from
changing. I would like to thank the Russ
Martin show for keeping their show so lively, cause mine could have turned for
the worst, and you only realize about it when you reach the end of the turn.
